Friday evening 15 minutes: Shutdown to close the week

We cover a 15-minute shutdown routine on Friday evenings that briefly closes your calendar, desk, and to-do list in your head. Clearing open loops as you move into the weekend will reduce Monday anxiety starting Sunday night and allow you to feel more rested.

Have a nice Friday

This is a daily routine for shaping your week. Use “Friday evening 15 minutes: Shutdown to close the week.” to realign the rhythm of everyday life.

If you ‘pretend’ to finish work on Friday evening and move on to the weekend, Monday anxiety starts on Sunday night. The 15-minute shutdown is time to close open loops, not open new projects.

It's not a perfect arrangement. All I have to do is close the door for ‘me next Monday morning.’

After 15 minutes, turn off work notifications and switch to weekend mode. The clearer the boundaries, the longer the weekend.

Calendar 5 minutes

Only confirm fixed appointments and deadlines for next week. You can check the detailed schedule again on Monday morning.

Put ‘things you put off’ in the first slot on Monday morning or boldly delete them. All that comes to mind on the weekend is a line of notes.

Meeting invitations and unconfirmed schedules must be accepted/declined within 5 minutes on Friday. Reduce the surprise of waking up on Monday morning.

5 minutes at desk

Put away the cups, notes, and cables, leaving only what you need for Monday morning.

‘Start next week’ with tabs organized on the screen and one folder on the desktop. Save and close any open files.

Desk lamp, water, one notebook—just the minimum set for the first 90 minutes on Monday.

5 minutes in my head

In my notebook, I only write down ‘what I am grateful for this week’ and ‘one thing next week’. This is not an analysis report.

I only write down my worries in the ‘Monday 10 Minutes’ slot and promise not to think about them on the weekend.

The act of writing itself becomes a switch that closes the loop in your head.

Turn off work app and email notifications after 15 minutes. If you have a separate ‘work’ device, leave it in the living room and don’t bring it into the bedroom all weekend.

Paired with two screen-free hours on Sunday morning, the beginning and end of the week share the same philosophy.

This Friday evening, try turning on a timer for just 15 minutes. Monday mornings can be a little less hectic.

A 15-minute shutdown is a gift for the weekend and preparation for Monday.

15 minutes to close an open loop—reduces the time work floats around in your mind all weekend.

15 minutes on Friday night—just a little extra for me next Monday morning.
