Work Rhythm

Thursday morning, choose your three priorities for the day

On Thursday morning, we cover a 10-minute routine where you pick just three priorities for the day. Urgent requests pile up as the week progresses, so in the morning I re-set my 'must do today' list.

Thursday morning, choose your three priorities for the day.

This is a daily routine for shaping your week. Use “Thursday morning, choose your three priorities for the day.” to realign the rhythm of everyday life.

Thursday is a day that brings both relief that 'this week is almost over' and pressure that 'there's still a lot left to do.' To-dos piled up on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, sudden requests, deadlines on Friday—if you start your day with no priorities, you'll be in reactive mode until the evening.

Immediately after going to work, the first 10 minutes at home, after your morning coffee—repeat at the same time and in the same place. 10 minutes on Thursday morning does not replace your weekly plan. It is a reset to choose what to focus on ‘just for today’. If you set your direction for the remaining half of the week at Wednesday's Midweek Reset, Thursday is the day to narrow that direction down to 'today'.

Thursday morning, when plans falter

Go through your to-do app, notes, and calendar for 2 minutes. Only view ‘Until today’ and ‘This week’ items. It's not even yet. If the list exceeds 20 items, separate ‘today’ and ‘later’ first. Later is off the list today. Things, Todoist, paper notes—any tool is fine. The important thing is to finish within 10 minutes.

three lines starting with a verb

In your notebook, write down three lines of ‘what you want to get done today’. Each line begins with a verb. ‘Finishing the report’, ‘Feedback to Team A’, ‘Exercise for 30 minutes’. When you feel like going over three things, the ‘just three things’ rule makes your day realistic. The fourth is postponed to ‘nice to have’.

When the 10-minute timer rings, put down your pen. If three things are determined, it is a success. Perfect time allocation can be done again in the morning. If, after writing it down, you feel, ‘I don’t have to do this today,’ feel free to leave it out. Thursday can be a day to choose to ‘do less’.

Give 90 minutes for the first one.

Allocate 90 minutes in the morning to the first of the three—the one that is most important or requires energy. Put a ‘Focus’ block on your calendar. The remaining two are placed in the afternoon and evening slots, or specified as ‘Friday if not today’.

Thursday morning reset is a mid-term check-in to ‘reset the week’. This is a starting point for intentionally using the 1.5 days left until Friday. Paired with Wednesday's Midweek Reset, the direction for the second half of the week becomes clearer. Putting your Slack status and calendar blocks together as your first priority will make it easier to stick to your morning focus.

Thursday morning's three 'deals for the day'. 10 minutes is enough. By connecting Friday with three performance reviews, you can intentionally close out the second half of the week. This Thursday, pick up your pen. Once the first priority is done, the other two are freed up in the afternoon.
