10 minutes of cable: from under the desk

Here are practical tips for reducing friction around your desk by organizing power strips, charging cables, and headphone cables in just 10 minutes. It's not a perfect wiring diagram, but making sure it doesn't get tangled up again saves a little stress every morning.

cable management

This is a daily space routine that lightens everyday life. Use “10 minutes of cable: from under the desk” to build a more wellness-friendly home or desk.

If the cables get tangled, the '30 seconds of searching' repeats several times a day. The little friction of remembering where the charger is, untangling cords, and rummaging through power strips adds up and drains me of energy in the morning and before work. The 10-Minute Cleanup is not aimed at a perfect wiring diagram, but only at ‘no tangles again’. When the area under your desk and under your feet is tidy, the distance your eyes and hands can move becomes shorter, making it easier to concentrate. If you spend less time looking for a charger in the morning after organizing, the first 10 minutes of your day will feel lighter.

10 minute sequence

Turn off the power and disconnect the cables that are not in use. Fix the power strip in a place under your feet or behind your desk. Tie the excess lines with Velcro ties or clips, and secure the lines across the floor with tape or cable rails. There is no need to attach a label, it is enough to be able to see ‘where the line comes from’ at a glance. It’s okay if it’s not perfect after 10 minutes.

Determine the charging location

Decide on a ‘place’ for each phone, tablet, and earphone. Only charge at night, no wires on your desk during the day—make the rules where possible. When paired with bedroom charging, there is a clear delineation between the desk as a work area and the bedroom as a rest area. You'll be less likely to be late in the morning because you're trying to find your Zen.

Leave only frequently used items

Every Friday, during the 5-minute shutdown, I just scan the lines. Re-tie any loose ties and straighten any new tangles. A 10-minute investment and a weekly 5-minute check-in will reduce a little stress every morning. Cable management is not a one-time task, but low maintenance costs will go a long way. The less you can see under your desk, the less dizzy your head will be.
