For 5 minutes between meetings, we will guide you through a stretching sequence for your neck, shoulders, and back that will help you get out of your chair and relax. Even if you don't have time to exercise, moving briefly every 60 minutes will reduce neck and back discomfort and help you regain concentration in the afternoon.

This is a practical daily routine. Use “5-minute out-of-chair stretches for a working body” as a small habit you can repeat.
‘No exercise time’ and ‘No 5 minutes of stretching’ are different. A short break relieves muscle tension and restores focus for the next meeting. Applied ergonomics studies report that 2 to 5 minutes of movement every 60 minutes is associated with reduced neck and back discomfort.
Five minutes is a good length to squeeze in between meetings, before or after lunch, or during the afternoon reset. You don't need sportswear or a mat, and you can even do it in the hallway outside the conference room.
It's not about perfect yoga, it's about 'moving'.
Roll your shoulders back and slightly pull your chin. Slowly move your neck back and forth. Tilt your ears toward your shoulder for 15 seconds on each side.
The neck and shoulders are connected to each other. When your shoulders roll forward, your neck also becomes tense. Simply rolling your shoulders back will reduce the strain on your neck.
Stand up, stretch your arms upward, open your chest, and clasp your hands behind your back. Hold for 15 seconds. Place your hands on the desk and repeat rounding and straightening your back in the cat/cow position.
The cat/cow pose is effective in restoring flexibility to the spine. Breathing slowly and repeating 5 times is sufficient. This is especially helpful in the afternoon when your back muscles are stiff.
Sit on a chair, place one ankle on the opposite knee (figure-four), and lower your upper body. 20 seconds each side. Next, calf stretch—Place one foot back against the wall.
Sitting for long periods of time puts tension on your buttocks and the backs of your thighs. figure-four stretches are discreet and effective. Calf stretching is especially necessary on days when you've been standing or walking all day.
Set the timer for 5 minutes and perform the above actions in order. When you're done, you can go back to your seat right away. The standard is to feel ‘your body is relaxed’ rather than to feel that you ‘worked out’.
If you have meetings every hour, make it a habit to stretch for 5 minutes right after the meeting. If you repeat it for the same amount of time and in the same order, your brain will tell you, “It’s time to stretch.”
When working from home, simply getting up and walking to the window between video meetings can be effective. Spending 5 minutes off camera helps me focus in the afternoon.
On days when your neck is particularly stiff, try repeating the chin pull three more times. Even small additions make a difference.
5 minutes of stretching is a small investment in your day. Before your next meeting, set a timer for 5 minutes and wake up.
