Sleep Prep
We'll cover one change to protecting your sleep environment: moving alarms, charging, and scrolling out of the bedroom. Just by changing your charging location, your phone habits before going to bed and after waking up will change, leaving your bedroom a resting place.

This is a practical daily routine. Use “Charging outside the bedroom: the first rule of sleep” as a small habit you can repeat.
One piece of advice that is repeated in sleep hygiene research is to reduce screens in the bedroom. The easiest version to implement is to change the charging location.
When alarms, charging, and pre-sleep scrolling are all tied to one device, your bedroom becomes a typing space rather than a resting space.
Just one change—the location of your charger—can cause a cascade of changes in your alarm, sleeping, and waking habits.
Fix the charger in one of the following locations: the entrance, living room, or kitchen. Bedroom outlets are for other purposes only - lamps, clocks.
The alarm is a clock and speaker instead of a phone. Leave only books, water, and dim lighting in the bedroom.
Once you have decided on a charging location, share it with your family and roommates. Once ‘living room charging’ becomes a house rule, it is easy to maintain.
30 minutes before going to bed, leave your phone in the living room and go to the bedroom. A ‘just once’ bedroom viewing day will bring back the habit.
If I feel anxious, I write down a list of things to check in the first 10 minutes of tomorrow morning on a piece of paper and leave it in the living room along with my phone.
Awakening times may vary slightly for the first three days. From day 4, your body adjusts to the new rhythm.
You'll never pick up your phone again to turn off the alarm in your bedroom. Sometimes walking to the living room for 10 seconds after waking up can help you wake up in the morning.
If you postpone your morning scrolling until ‘after a cup of coffee,’ your day will start a little less distracted.
If you leave it in the same position on the weekend, the boundary between weekday and weekend sleep will not be blurred.
Once out-of-bedroom charging is in place, pair it with your evening phone basket. After 8pm, leave your phone in the living room and charge it in the living room.
The goal is not complete digital isolation, but ‘no screens in the bedroom’—starting with a small territory.
Tonight, just change the location of your charger. The first rule of sleep is closer than you think.
The bedroom is just a place to sleep—one charging location protects its boundaries.
